10 Hebrew Words Your English Bible Hides

Translator's notes from the New Messianic Version (Tov Rose)

English Bibles smooth out the Hebrew: names of God become titles, personal names become bare labels, whole prophecies get buried inside transliterations. For each of ten words, this guide shows what English Bibles print, what the Hebrew carries, one real NMV verse quoted verbatim — and what the NMV's translation choice reveals.

The ten words

  1. 1. Elōhīm — "God" (the Many Powered)
  2. 2. Yehōvah — "LORD" (the Name behind the title)
  3. 3. Adōnai — "Lord" (the Father's voice)
  4. 4. Ro'i — "my shepherd" (Psalm 23's pairing)
  5. 5. Noach — "Noah" (rest, consolation)
  6. 6. Shem — "Shem" (name, great reputation)
  7. 7. Yerushalayim — "Jerusalem" (foundation of peace)
  8. 8. Yisra'el — "Israel" (he holds onto the heel)
  9. 9. Tziyon — "Zion" (parched place)
  10. 10. Yah — hidden inside "Hallelujah"

A taste, from the guide

"Hallelujah is a Hebrew sentence smuggled into English as a single word: hallelu ('praise') + Yah, the shortened form of the Name. The NMV prints it: 'Praise you the LORD- Yah [Behold The Hand] (Messiah Pre-Incarnate).' The 'Hallelujah' you have sung your whole life had a name in it. Now you can see whose."

Every NMV verse in the guide is quoted word for word from the NMV corpus — the bracketed notes are the NMV's own translation choices, exactly as they print.

What's inside

Ten pages. Why ten words matter, the bracket-decoder (how the NMV's square brackets, parentheses, and italics show the translation's work), three comparison exercises to try tonight on YouVersion, and the full ten-word walk-through — each with what English Bibles print, what's hidden, one verbatim NMV verse, and the NMV's translation choice.

The NMV's governing rule, from the publisher's own site (nmvbible.org): the "names" aren't names — they're how you know who is speaking. This guide is the working demonstration of that rule, word by word.

If you read the Messianic Bible Buyer's Guide, this is its Part 2 — the deeper companion: not which Bible to buy, but what the Hebrew actually says.
