Which Bible-Study Software Is Actually Worth It?

Notes from a Bible translator — on how to evaluate study software before you spend a dollar.

A Bible translator reads in the original languages every day. That changes which software features matter — and which are marketing. This page is the category-first checklist: what to check, what to ask, and how to compare — free.

What to check

A translator's question isn't "which brand is best?" — it's "does this tool let me see what the original languages actually say, and does it let me check my own work?" Here are the categories worth testing before any purchase:

Original-language word study

Can you click any English word and see the underlying Hebrew or Greek — every place it occurs, not just a dictionary gloss?

Interlinears and manuscripts

Can you read the text line by line in the original, and see where manuscripts differ — without paying extra for every layer?

Trusted commentaries

Which scholars and commentaries are included, which cost extra, and can you test the ones you'd actually cite?

Library portability

If you stop subscribing, what happens to the library you bought? What can you take with you — and what stays behind?

Trial availability

Can you test the full feature set before paying — ideally free for weeks, not a three-day teaser?

Total cost of ownership

Subscription plus the add-ons you'll actually need, over three years — not the headline price. That's the number that matters.
